The combination of Sigi Cohen's rollicking text and James Foley's irreverent illustrations make this a sure winner with kids (particularly boys) aged 7 to 107.

October seems to be a Shaun Tan sort of month!

October seems to be a Shaun Tan sort of month!

Shaun Tan's latest book, The Singing Bones, published by Allen & Unwin, has just been released. Signed copies are available from Books Illustrated NOW!

In this beautifully presented volume, the essence of seventy-five fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm is wonderfully evoked by Shaun Tan's extraordinary sculptures and his beautifully succinct text.

'These little figures of clay, with their simplified features, their single attributes, are perfect realisations of the strangeness of the characters they represent.'
Philip Pullman, from his foreword to the book.

If you are in Melbourne you have the chance to see an exhibition of these sculptures at:
SHAUN TAN – THE SINGING BONES exhibition
No Vacancy Gallery

Naidoc Week celebrated at Fed Square Book Market  - July 12

As well as hosting Anna Walker who was promoting her new picture book 'Mr Huff'
we celebrated Naidoc week with a display of books and prints on our stand.

We were delighted when a family strolling past, after attending the football at the MCG,
spotted the picture book 'Kick with your left Foot' written by Paul Seden and illustrated by Karen Briggs (published by Allen & Unwin). As we found out, Paul Seden was their cousin and they were visiting Melbourne from many parts of Australia ... so there was much excitement over a chance connection and meeting in the centre of Melbourne!

Behind the Studio Door with Mark Wilson. Edition 3, 17 April 2015

Don't miss our third edition of Behind the Studio Door, this time with Mark Wilson.

"Welcome. Come into my studio, which is an old garage, and I love it. There’s plenty of natural light and a high ceiling for big canvases. The walls are covered with half finished paintings, pictures, postcards, photos and inspirational things - again, some very old things.

I have children’s art up all around me. It inspires me. Children naturally experiment with colour and pattern without even knowing it. Pick a colour – any colour. They don’t care if purple shouldn’t go next to dark green or whatever. I spent so many years following the colour and design ‘rules’ of my teachers. Never again! They should have six year olds teaching painting at art school. (Image 2) I think that is why I like painting big abstract canvases. There is a freedom of expression and technique that is liberating. No pre-conceived ideas. No visual constraints. Pure self expression, like a child doing finger-painting!..."

Are we there yet ? ... Yes, in Parkes!

Are we there yet?: a journey around Australia is one of Books Illustrated touring exhibitions and is currently been shown in Parkes NSW.

This exhibition is based on the award winning (The Children's Book Council of Australia's 2005 Picture Book of the Year Awardpicture book Are we there yet?, written and illustrated by Alison Lester. Its the story of a family trip around Australia told by eight year old Gracie and is based on an actual journey undertaken by Alison and her family.

The exhibition showcases Alison’s original illustrations along with preliminary work for the making of this book including: ideas and sketches; page roughs and dummy books; her children’s travel journals; family photographs taken on their journey around Australia – and the all important map!

Living up to its name, the exhibition has been exhibited in many venues around Australia, and overseas with fabulous feed back about the engagement of visitors with the exhibition. However, we have been particularly thrilled with this response from Shellie Buckle, manager cultural, education and library services ...

We officially opened the exhibition as part of Storytime yesterday.
We had a lovely morning.
A library family last year travelled around Australia for 5 months. Oscar the three and a half year old and his Mum created a map and photo display of their holiday, just like Are We There Yet?
He told us stories about their trip. Such an eloquent little man!
